The kidneys are vital organs that filter waste products and extra fluid from the blood, help regulate electrolytes (salt, potassium, etc.), balance water, and produce hormones that regulate blood pressure and red blood cell production.Such a test helps detect early kidney disease — often before symptoms appear — which is important if you have risk factors (e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, family history of kidney disease).
